About KurdAI

KurdAI is an independent, mission-driven project dedicated to serving and preserving the Kurdish language, history, and culture by training modern AI models fluent in Kurdish.

Our mission

Every language is a precious heritage. Kurdish, a rich language with several dialects and sub-dialects, is spoken by tens of millions of people, yet remains under-served by mainstream AI. KurdAI works to change that: building tools trained with care and understanding for the Kurdish language, its culture, and history, so that Kurds everywhere can chat, translate, learn, and create in their own tongue.

Developing custom tools

We develop specialized, fine-tuned AI tools to support the dialects of the Kurdish language, as well as English. Five tools are live today: Jire (a Kurdish chat assistant); Wergêr (translation between Sorani, Kurmancî, and English); Sorani-to-Latin transliteration; text-to-speech; and speech-to-text. Voice chat is coming soon. Several of our models are also shared with the research community.

The story behind KurdAI

KurdAI was founded by Karim Rahimi, a Harvard University researcher originally from Rojhelat of Kurdistan, who has long worked in machine learning and natural language processing. KurdAI grew out of a simple conviction: that every language is a precious part of human heritage, and that languages under pressure deserve a fair place in the AI era, not to be neglected or left behind. Kurdish, spoken by tens of millions across Sorani, Kurmancî and other dialects, was being under-served by mainstream AI, and KurdAI began as an effort to change that.

The project is built on respect for all mother tongues and the belief that no community should have to give up its language to take part in new technology. KurdAI continues in that spirit today, growing alongside the community it serves.

A community project

KurdAI is an independent project built for the Kurdish community. It grows with the support, feedback, and contributions of linguists and the community.

How KurdAI is funded

We keep KurdAI sustainable by offering generous free access to individuals, students, and researchers, supported by paying users and by donations from people who care about the language. This is how we keep serving the community and building for the future.
